The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has threatens to embark on strike, October 19 if its members are not paid their salaries owed by concerned states of the federation .
The Union said it is not bothered by the ‘no work, no pay’ policy against industrial actions by the Federal Government.
The President of the union, Comrade Micheal Olukoya-Alogba disclosed this while speaking in Lagos on Thursday night at the presentation of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award by the Nigerian Breweries Plc-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund.
He said the policy was only meant to delude Nigerian workers but that they remained resolute and undeterred in the fight against what he described as maltreatment of Nigerian teachers by the government.
Olukoya explained that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the union will meet in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Thursday October 19, where the members in all the states owing salaries will be given the required nod to commence indefinte strike.
“In Bayelsa State, secondary school teachers are being owed four months while the primary school teachers are owed nine months. It is the same situation in almost all the states of the federation.
“It is not only unacceptable, it is a national embarrassment. Without pre-empting NEC, I want to believe that decision has been taken at our meeting of October 4, so as long as our members are not paid before then, nationwide strike is the next thing.”
