Today is World AIDS Day, a special day set aside by World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in the Populace, commemorate those that have passed on and celebrate victories and successes recorded in the fight against HIV/AIDS as well as address the existing bottlenecks in order to make progress.

The right to health means many different things: that no one person has a greater right to health than anyone else; that there is adequate healthcare infrastructure; that healthcare services are respectful and non-discriminatory; and that healthcare must be medically appropriate and of good quality.
Its in view of this Day , Bauchi State Agency for the Control AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malarial Agency, BACTMA will on Monday Dec. 4th holds joint sensitization rally in Bauchi.
The Chairman of Agency, Dr. Mansir Dada disclosed this on Thursday , November 30 during a Press conference held at BACTMA Conference Hall.
He added media programs will be aired some radio stations and the state television station.

Dr Dada further said the Agency will also hold Community Outreach Activities in Bursali, Gololo and Bulkachuwa communities from Monday 4th to Tuesday 5th December.

SITUATION OF HIV/AIDS RESPONSE IN BAUCHI STATE PRESS STATEMENT.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press
INTRODUCTION
Tomorrow Friday 1st December 2017 is the 2017 World AIDS Day, a special day put aside by World Health Organization (WHO) to be commemorated by all responsible Government, Non-Governmental Organizations and Private Sector to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in the Populace, commemorate those that have passed on and celebrate victories and successes recorded in the fight against HIV/AIDS as well as address the existing bottlenecks in order to make progress.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES
The Bauchi State Government under the able leadership of Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar Esq through the State Ministry of Health and Bauchi State Agency For the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Malaria (BACATMA) in collaboration with State and Federal Health and Non-Health relevant MDAs, International Donor and Implementing Partners, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community Leaders have decided to conduct these series of activities to Commemorate the 2017 World AIDS Day in Bauchi State thus;
1. Press conference on situation of HIV/AIDS Response in Bauchi State. Thursday 30th November 2017 at BACATMA Conference Hall.
2. Joint Sensitization rally at Bauchi on Monday 4th December 2017
3. Media Programmes at Bauchi State Television Authority (BATV), ALBARKA FM Station Bauchi, Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC) FM Station Bauchi From Thursday 30th November to Sunday 3rd December 2017.

BASIC INFORMATION ON HIV/AIDS INFECTION
HIV Infection is an infection caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that affects and gradually destroys the Human immune system. If action is not taken it weakens the immune system leading to opportunistic infections which progresses to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and Death. It is transmitted through sexual intercourse, contact between blood of infected person and blood of uninfected person and Infected Mother to Child transmission. Symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, fever, diarrhoea and cough in severe illness there symptoms of associated opportunistic infections like TB, Meningitis and cancers. The infection can be confirmed through HIV Test. The cure is not yet available but effective treatment is available. Taking the treatment drugs will strengthen the immune system and enable the person to live a normal life like any other chronic disease. HIV Infection can be prevented through abstinence from pre-marital sexual activities, being faithful to sexual partners, Condom use, STIs Treatment, Voluntary Male Medical circumcision, Antiretroviral Therapy, Pre and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission (eMTCT), Safe Blood and blood products transfusion and Harm reduction for people who use and inject drugs.

ACHIEVEMENTS FROM 2015-2017
1. Ongoing expansion of PMTCT/ HCT SITES to atleast 1 per ward for 323 wards, currently the 113 sites have been expanded to 171 hoping to become fully operational by January 2018 where by the end of 2018 we expect to have 407 PMTCT/HCT Sites. This expansion is supported by EU-UNICEF MNCH-N Project
2. Enactment of Law by Bauchi State House of assembly against Discrimination of HIV Positive Clients and Pre-Marital Screening for HIV and HB Genotype.
3. Extensive Awareness creation in the Populace through engagement of the Political Stakeholders, Media, Traditional and Religious leaders, Civil Society Organization, NEPHWAN and many community based organizations.
4. Ongoing establishment of State of art Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Unit at BACATMA.
5. Ongoing effort in establishment of Coordination Laboratory for Sample/Results movement for Viral Load, Early Infant Diagnosis and ensuring the quality of the HIV laboratory services.
6. Establishment of 13 Gene X-pert Machines in 10 LGAs of the State for early detection of TB
7. Development of Bauchi State HIV response Sustainability Road Map (SRM)
8. Development of Bauchi State HIV/AIDs Response Strategic Plan 2017-2021
CHALLENGES
1. Data- Knowing the correct Prevalence and Incidence of HIV in the State, quality of data generated at Health facilities, Data transmission into DHIS-2 platform and use of the data for decision making.
2. Inefficient supply chain system for HIV commodities
3. Overdependence on External Donor support for HIV/AIDS Care, treatment and Support
4. Limited access to PMTCT and HCT services
5. Lack of PCR Machine viral load, DNA PCR for EID in Bauchi State.
6. Poor Follow-Up of HIV Exposed Infants.
7. Stigma and Discrimination.
8. Rising New infections among adolescents and young Adults
WAY FORWARD
To achieve the United Nation Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) through the Vision 90-90-90 of ending HIV new Infections by 2030 we have these plans;
1. Full implementation of PMTCT/HCT Expansion plan to reach of the 323 wards across the 20 LGAs of the State to improve access and reach the 90% of the HIV Positive in the State
2. Strengthening of the Existing 23 ART Sites to improve the quality of the Services
3. Complete the establishment and Operationalization of the HIV Services Coordination Laboratory at BACATMA Office to quick Viral load , DNA PCR For EID samples and results movement as well as ensuring the quality and support for the HIV laboratory services as Temporary Plan and Procurement and Installation of Viral Load machine in Bauchi as Permanent solution
4. Implementation of Bauchi State HIV Response Sustainability Road Map which will guide the Bauchi State Government in gradual takeover of external Donor heavily dependent program.
5. Sustenance and expansion of Awareness creation activities to the rising populace of our adolescents and young adults in their domains.
6. Support for full Implementation of Bauchi State Law against Discrimination of HIV positive Clients and Pre-Marital screening for HIV and Genotype.
7. Completion and operationalization of the State of Art Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of BACATMA to support the Health facilities in improving Data generation, collation, quality, entry into DHIS-2 and use for action as well as supporting and full participation in the FMOH-NACA 2018 Population based HIV/AIDS survey which will give us the true prevalence of HIV in the State and Country.
8. Key in and support the Federal Government National Supply Chain Integrated Project (NSCIP) through the state LMCU to ensure timely uninterrupted supply of quality HIV drugs and commodities to our Health facilities.
