Meet Kaduna 'Kamu' Specialist, Mairo Abdullahi

Mairo Abdullahi, from Zaria Kaduna Sate, specialist on traditional 'Kamu' decoration widely known in many town and cities of Northern Nigeria.

She is exceptionally creative and innovative, and her decoration definitely stands out.

Mairo makes use of different known traditional Arewa artifacts and combines them with contemporary wedding decor to produce refreshing designs.

The iron lady  attended Therbow Primary School, and Federal Government Girls' College Zaria. She graduated from Nottingham Trent University with BA Accounting and Finance.

Mairo’s business is inspired by her desire to revive some of the cultural practices of Arewa. To be specific, the special cultural activities attached with Arewa weddings, naming ceremonies etc.

She feels that these traditions are gradually fading away and thought perhaps she could gradually incorporate some of those things into today's celebrations.

Mairo is a self taught decorator, but her passion for Arewa culture and sheer creativity make her work stand out from the clutter.

She combines different objects like ankara materials and calabashes in ways one would not ordinarily think of and the result is always amazing. She emerged among the top 40 under 40 Arewa Entrepreneurship list in 2017 done by Nishadi TV and Sahara Reporters.

Mairo is a very sought after ‘Kamu’ decorator because her work is always a delight to see, and keeps people talking about her creativity.
